Former catcher John Stearns died at 71 years old after a long fight with cancer

Stearns was a four-time Top pick, who played for the Mets from 1975-1984

In spite of his disease, Stearns willed his method for going to Old Timers' Day on August 27, only three weeks before he died

He was at first drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies at No. 2 generally speaking in the 1973 MLB Draft

Stearns was subsequently shipped off the Mets in the arrangement that saw Pull McGraw get exchanged to Philadelphia
